Every year a medical team from Cambodia Vision, a volunteer organisation in Australia, travels to a remote region in Cambodia to carry out cataract procedures, blindness prevention, hearing tests and basic medical care, completely free of charge to the locals. We travel with a mission to Svay Rieng, capturing some incredible moments of what is a remarkable journey.
The Hearing and Speech Department is headed by Dr Dr Chyrisse Hines from La Trobe University. Together with volunteers from La Trobe and Australia wide they service the Cambodian community to provide help for the hearing impaired.
As well as screening for cataract patients, the Optometry team provide services for people who need prescription glasses and general tests to check the health of the eye. Depending on donations each year, sunglasses are also provided.
Due the growth of the number of GPs volunteering means that we are now able to provide to the local Cambodian community more general health checks and medication mostly kindly donated by Pharmaceutical companies.
Depending on the case some Cambodians may be able to receive other minor surgeries for their condition.
